Amber Word
I make art as a way of listening—to the land, to the materials and to the more-than-human lives unfolding all around us. Living half-time in the Jemez Valley, I find endless inspiration in New Mexico’s animals, plants, changing light and wonderfully dramatic landscapes.
I work primarily in wood batik, dye and ink, following the natural grain of the wood and allowing each piece to reveal a little of what it wants to become. My background in sound and frequency shapes how I play with rhythm, resonance, color and line—and the dance that emerges between them.
I love making art that brings people into relationship: with place, with their own creativity and with one another. That includes shared community art projects, alcohol ink and acrylic pour classes and delightfully specific custom party favors made to reflect the people and stories being celebrated.
My original artwork also takes form as prints, greeting cards, stickers, suncatchers, journals, jewelry and DIY watercolor kits, inviting creativity and connection into everyday life.
